Contemporary Applied Artist

I’ve recently finished my degree at University of Hertfordshire, graduated from BA Applied Art Hons. Having initially been interested in jewellery, I quickly fell into the use of ceramics as my main material. The use of drawing, mark making and building through ceramic inspired my more visual side. Leading me to created a series of work base on narration, using Tim Burton’s short story ‘Mummy Boy’. I have created my own vision of his story by incorporating my own illustrations which have when been transferred into individual wall tiles given these elements a playfully, fresh and stimulating feel. The use of layering colour matt and shiny have achieves a visual depth, resulting in a rich and captivating imagery.

I have also interpreted his story into a 3-dimensional form creating a sculptural piece, taking from the brutal destruction of ‘Mummy boy’. Mixing fabric with ceramic I have given the piece virility as well as keeping the raw and rugged feel of bandages. The distorted scale keeps the mystery and enchantment to the narration, where as the use of colour as help remain the real life horror of death and decaying.

The use of my jewellery skill has aloud me to use a mix of metals and ceramic to add another depth to my 3-dimensional form. Using enamels on metal, and sprig moulds, I have created a collection of individual bugs exposed from ‘Mummy boys’ head. These pieces relay the story in fall, adding vibrancy and a sense of fun as the bugs gradually transformed into a range of jewellery, softening the harsh and disturbing ending.
